Top Tunes – June 2024

Here are the Top Tunes for May:

#5 ‘Oh Dove’ – Men I Trust, Untourable Album

June was a month full of change. I left home and spent three weeks in Montreal. Untourable Album has such a Montreal vibe to it, so I would often listen to it while walking around the city. “Oh Dove” was one that I played a lot and I really like the last forty seconds of the song when the lyrics fade out and there is just this mythical little outro. I wish I actually knew what these sounds were so I could talk about them better, but alas, I study literature and environment. You’ve got to trust me though, give it a listen and observe the vibes. Men I Trust is overall such an awesome band and responsible for many bangers I listen to all the time, like “Numb” and “Show me how.”

#4 ‘The Pod’ – Hum, You’d Prefer an Astronaut

This is my veryseriousIneedtopackfor3monthsin2days song. POV: It’s three AM, your room is an absolute disaster. Everything you’ve ever owned is on the basement floor. Your cat (Little Grey) is trying to dig a hole in your duffel bag. You are stuck contemplating packing green cargo shorts or green linen shorts. Life might be crazy at this moment, but at least the playlist is fire. This also writes an essay like nobody’s business.

#3 ‘Bobcaygeon’ – The Tragically Hip, Phantom Power

Unfortunately, whenever I think of The Tragically Hip, I think of the whack Anne of Green Gables adaptation called Anne with an E which uses “Ahead by a Century” as the intro song. However, I like “Bobcaygeon” because it makes me feel so yeehaw. Y’now, riding on horseback, speaking with a little twang. I don’t actually know what this song is about and I am too lazy to dig into it. I also don’t want to find out it’s about something completely different than my cowboyland fantasy because then I will need to find a new song to turn to when I want to daydream of roaming the plains with my steed in my western regalia.

#2 ‘Erase/Rewind’ – The Cardigans, Gran Turismo

Another 90s banger. It’s also so city-coded. I feel like a real Montrealer walking the streets to this boogie and I especially love the opening. This song makes me want to wear sunglasses and be mysterious. Gosh, I wish I could be mysterious but I yap too much! A girl can dream.

#1 ‘Harness Your Hopes (B-Side)’ – Pavement, Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Ed.

This is a banger. I know it’s popular and whatever and we need to be niche and not like popular music or else we are losers but guys! I gotta give in. This makes me think of going on a roadtrip and chilling with friends. Not the lyrics though just the musical vibes. I think I need to stop doing my top tunes because it is so hard for me to explain why I like the songs I do. How do I explain that the break at 1:53 is my favorite part? IDK. I think I should have listened more in music class instead of mixing and matching my recorder pieces with friends – now that I look back at that memory, what was I thinking. Ew.

Anywho, this is a great ol’ tune (quite old actually, I’ve realized that we got a 90s streak for June (exempt is Men I Trust)). I’ve started to listen to more of Pavement after this song. I especially like their album Crooked Rain, which I am listening to as I am writing this post.

So there it is. These are the songs for June. This post was speedily written as I am currently chilling in the Italian Riviera eating dangerous amounts of gelato, so my fingers are sticky and it’s hard to type all these thoughts out.
